Default Why fold any starting hand?

I'm just wondering...I've been reading on pre-flop starting hands. I've started to follow them to my playing style. Then, I realized...Why would you fold any pre-flop hand. There is always a chance that you might get a gutshot, trips, etc...So why would you fold?

So what? You won't hit hands nearly enough to make a profitable in the long run. The amount of money that you make when you strike lightning doesn't make up for the many many times that you miss. You will bleed a slow but inevitable death. That's the basic idea.

Some hands are better than others. Why would you put money into the pot voluntarily while behind on a regular basis for no good reason?

Its an equation.

The likelihood of you winning the pot and how much you win on avg. doing so minus the likelihood of losing the pot, and how much you lose on avg. doing so.

Because a hand like 74o loses much more often than it wins when you go to showdown, you need to make up for that by either winning the pots via bluffing, or having them lose large amounts to you, while you only lose a small amount to them.

If Bob plays only 20% of his hands, he's going to be way ahead of your 74o. So from just that, its going to be tough to win more than you lose. But if Bob pushes allin on every flop, regardless of what he hits or misses, then you should play every hand against him.

Its just a matter of finding the right balance of the equation for each opponent/game.
