Default A lesson in why AA should be raised preflop!

Last night, Stars 5.50 2-table SNG. Down to 5 (4 paid), and at the time, it looked like it'd be a competition for 2nd.

Then this happened...

PokerStars Game #441124563: Tournament #1638333, Hold'em No Limit - Level VIII (200/400) - 2004/05/18 - 02:17:28 (ET)

Seat 1: J Swan 88 (1558 in chips)
Seat 2: wink1 (3926 in chips)
Seat 7: KOMA (15104 in chips)
Seat 8: habinero (2227 in chips)
Seat 9: sffan72 (4185 in chips)
J Swan 88: posts the ante 25

*** SHOW DOWN ***
sffan72: shows [4h 5d] (a straight, Three to Seven)
wink1: shows [Ad As] (a pair of Aces)
sffan72 collected 8727 from pot
KOMA said, "nice"
habinero said, "nh"
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot 8727 | Rake 0
Board [3h 6s 7c 2s Js]
Seat 1: J Swan 88 folded before Flop (didn't bet)
Seat 2: wink1 showed [Ad As] and lost with a pair of Aces
Seat 7: KOMA (button) folded on the Flop
Seat 8: habinero (small blind) folded on the Flop
Seat 9: sffan72 (big blind) showed [4h 5d] and won (8727) with a straight, Three to Seven

As I said as the next hand was being dealt, hell of a flop huh?

Of course, if he raises pre-flop I'm mucking those cards.

His mistake turned out to be my gain, as not only did I make the money with this (lucky) hand, I went on to win the whole bloody thing.

Yep agreed. I think with AA it's usually a matter of how much to raise. With that many people I would make a nice size raise. Heads up I could see making a weaker raise hoping for a reraise and then go all in.

I played in a tourney on Ladbrokes yesterday, down to 14 (i think) from about 120, top ten in the money, mid table I get AA

I raise 300
seat 6 goes all in 1400
seat 8 calls
seat 1 raises 3000
I call
seat 6 calls

Flop: Kc, Js, 4d
Turn: 7s
river: Qd

I think must be beaten by trips, unlucky i didn't pull an ace
Seat 6 shows AK
Seat 8 shows QK
Seat 1 shows AT and wins the lot with a straight

I leave the tourney pissed off and the fish in 1 walks into the money

Why did you only call? Sure, aces is the best starting hand, but when you let that many people see a flop, you're going to be beat. Just move all your chips in at that point, and maybe you could have won the hand.

pack that was my lot, all in bar a few pennies, whether I should have gone all in from the off is a different matter, I am a little wary of that having exited tourneys in the past when a maniac or 3 has flopped a set of deuces or so.
