J.W. definitely does not belong into the same sentence as the word "classy".

When I wanted to introduce a few friends to the world of Scotch, I bought a bottle of Talisker, and we had a great evening. Watching movies, smoking cigars, having fun. Then, out of nowhere, disaster struck: The bottle was empty! So we went to the gas station and as they enjoyed the whisky as much as I had hoped, they insisted on getting a bottle of Johnny Red Label, even though I told them that this stuff tasted like it came directly from the toilet bowl. Well, at least they got to know the difference between a good Scotch and J.W. that way.

The Black Label isn't that bad though, just way overpriced.

Scotch? Don't take this the wrong way guys but the only people in my neck of the woods that drink that shit have grandkids and tell war stories------from WW I!!!

Basically I'm down for whatever gets you drunk but I've managed to actually acquire a taste for certain alcohols that at first seemed unsavory--bourbon, dark beers, grain alcohol----but not scotch. I'd drink it in a pinch but that's it.

Several years ago a buddy of mine liberated enough booze from this liquor store he worked at to open a frigging nightclub. He had tall high dollar hootch in any direction you wanted to take it, so through him I tried Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Knockando, Dewars, Johnny Walker and probably several others I've forgotten but I never found any of that shit that I actually grew to like.

So enlighten me boys: Is it just that the shit that I tried was overpriced panther piss or am I missing something? (For the record most of the names 2mm and Cbone have ticked off are completely unfamiliar to me so maybe that's the problem.)

well most of the above is "panther piss" but maybe you're just not a whisky drinker. Like i'm not a whine drinker. i hate whine. you could give me the best and most expensive whine there is and i still wont drink it.

Weeeeell Jugs, most of the stuff you named is not that bad, but I wouldn't call it good either. It's standard supermarket Scotch. Seriously, if you want to give it a try, see if you can find a bar where they have a few Scotch, and then try 2 or 3 of them, drink some water inbetween. If they have a good assortment, I would recommend you try a strong one, Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Port Ellen (though I doubt you get that anywhere at all, the distillery is closed since like forever, and the bottles cost nearly as much as a spaceship ), Ardbeg or Bowmore, a mild one, that would be Glenfarclas, Glenmorangie, Glenkinchie or Auchentoshan, and then try a J.W. Red Label. If you don't recognize there are worlds between every one of those, you are a poor man, because you will never be able to enjoy Scotch. ;)

Well, I enjoy JW Black Lable, but whenever I have a really good Scotch, I always seem to forget what it is called!

This might end being a stupid question, but can anyone tell me the different kinds of Black Lable Scotch there is? I had a few shots at this Irish bar and all I could remember was the phrase 'Black Lable'. Which is why I gravitated to the JW BL, but I know it is not the same stuff I drank.
