I'm still traumatized from the Spongebob movie, which was fabulous until the moment the Hasselhoff showed up — and now I have a fear that if I attended the theme park, the Hoff might suddenly show up and offer me a ride. Or a Whopper.

That is irrelevant. Players online constantly make mention of the cards they folded and the hand they would have made if they stayed in the game. This is not allowed but cannot be policed in an online game. It certainly isn't allowed in a live game. It gives information to players in an active hand and is cheating, if at least not sportsmanlike. Just because it cannot be stopped doesn't make it right.

Telling someone what your cards are is not the same as showing them but having yet to act. We see opponents all of the time claiming to have pocket aces or great cards, but that is just table talk whether they have those cards or not. Flipping them over when you are last to act so as to get a reaction from opponents isn't probably as big a deal as made out to be in this thread, but it does seem to be slightly shady and having the intent of trying to gain knowledge that can only be acquired at that point by straddling the rules of the game, if not violating them in spirit. Some may perceive this to be completely acceptable tactics. I do not but I guess I should re-evaluate my position on this if it will help me win a few more pots. I mean, shouldn't I do whatever it takes to win more often? (Just ask Martha Stewart about having that attitude pertaining to the stock market. She was just trying to win more pots for herself at the expense of her opponents and at the expense of the rules of the game. She contends it was perfectly legal strategy, as anyone does that gets caught cheating.)

If the rules allow for it at the next game I am in then I will experiment with this technique. My personal position is that the rules shouldn't allow it, but I can only make up the rules for my own game. Feel free to flip your cards and then fold after the fact. I just can't agree on someone having the right to flip their cards and then stare me down (what is the ruling on this? How long do they have to do this?) and stare me down to get a read and then call or re-raise me. It just doesn't seem right. If it is then so be it.

Er Axis some people play home games just for fun and don't really care for the "rules" or even for the money or "pots". I would rather just have some fun with my friends chat and have a drink over some cards than get all pissy and say "wait....did....I....just see you... STRING BET WTF GET OUT" etc. My friends don't really play poker like I do and I pretty much let anything go cos its for small stakes and I don't want to get all preachy and spoil the atmosphere.

Personally I don't do this whole card turning over thing but I sure as hell wouldn't step in there and get all upset about it at my homegame. I'd probably just laugh or something.

This kind of reminds me of this time when I was a fresher in Uni. We invited some randoms over for a party and decided to have drinking games. There was this one guy who was obsessed with the rules of this one game. Like we couldn't just start drinking and having fun he had to go through all the rules and he even insisted we write them down for future reference so everyone could see

Yeah anyway we just ignored him and his stupid game and got pissed and had lots of fun.

More or stricter rules don't make things more fun.

PS -edit - You're welcome theonlythree

I wasn't talking about home games, rather was making mention of live games at casinos and the like. Therefore some people find interest in having the rules down cold. This whole site is intended for poker players to discuss such things. You are more than welcomed to trivialize this particular subject or compare me to the "rules stickler" that you have encountered in the past, but my home games are similar to yours in that my buds get drunk and basically can't even follow any assemblance of rules and so they sort of don't even exist.

I don't see the harm in having a thread like this one and soliciting the opinions of others with feelings on the subject. I'm sure we all enjoy a friendly game between friends where string bets and similar behaviors have little consequence, but there are also those here that take their poker seriously and so don't need to be told to basically lighten up when they are discussing certain aspects of the game. There comes a time when the game is quite serious and I just prefer to be prepared. There are probably very few subjects on this website where someone couldn't be told to chill out, that it's just a game, etc.. Personally, I prefer to search out advice and suggestions that can improve my game or give me a new perspective on poker. That tends to appear serious but I do have my silly side too. You would be more than welcome at one of my drunk-fest home games sometime.

Heh, this past week I was doing a home game, which was three handed. I'd fold a pot and the other guys would talk about whatever the fuck for like 5 minutes.

To entertain myself, I took the second deck (we always use two) and I rigged it to give the two guys quad K's vs quad A's...

I told them I did it afterwards, but it was worth it.

Hey I'm with you at casinos and the like obviously rules there should be enforced and enforced properly. Although I have never played at a casino I know it would piss me right off some guy got away with stuff like that apart from maybe one warning. But then my homegame buds aren't really going to go to the casino or anything so in essence are homegames aren't in preparation for the casino or bigger things to come they are just a get together and thats that.

Thanks for the invite too you're welcome to a beer anytime here too.
