Default Mexico Cruise + Poker

i am going on a 5 night cruise from New Orleans to Cozumel and Yucatan Mexico.

There are 2-3 days total at sea, where i will able to play some poker.

Anyone have any knowledge/experience/tips for what i should expect or do?

oh, its a carnival cruise so odds are there will be young lag tards

How much time do you have on Cozumel and in Yucatan (note spelling by the way )? I've spent some time there last year and loved it.

Edit: Also, have you been to Mexico before? Or the Caribbean?

I just took a Carnival cruise this month out of Tampa to Cozumel, Roatan, Belize and Caymans. Good times!

As for poker, Carnival typically has only one electronic poker table in their casinos (been on a few of their boats and this has been the case every time). On this last cruise they spread only 1/2 NL plus a couple $60 tourneys.

Even though there is no dealer, the rake is 10% up to a cap of $7 The players are amazingly awful, but with that rake and the fact most people are buying in for 50-100, you aren't going to get rich. There will be a couple regulars that play every night and a carousel of drunk people that don't understand poker. It is fun, but if you expect to make more than your drink bill you may be dissapointed.

I have never been on a cruise or anywhere near mexico before. The furthest south i have even been is Orlando, FL and Vegas. lol. Is there any specific spot i should go to in Yucatan or Cozumel? i will have 8 hours at both cities.

Thanks boiler, the harsh reality makes it seem like i won't be able to make any significant amount of money, but i will probably play for some fun and entertainment. $7 capped rake with no dealer? terrible. I guess the drinks and hot women will have to distract me.

We took the snorkeling+beach party excursion in Cozumel. It was really nice. You board a boat that goes to the south tip of Cozumel (~45 minute ride). Half way there you stop for snorkeling which was a fantastic location with a 20 foot depth reef. The beach was really nice with lots of activities. On the boat they served free margaritas both directions. It was a pretty good deal as far as excursions go.

The other sucky think about cruise boat casinos is they don't comp drinks. I would like to try one of cardplayer's official poker cruises - I bet that it a better structure for the players.

Nevertheless, I can't stress how bad the players are going to be - you won't get rich but barring a sick run of bad luck you should be up.

You have seen too many fun ship adverts.

THe age break down for carnival is similar to other lines.

45% 50+ 35% 30-50 and 20% < 30 IMO.

Also what BM says about the poker is true. When I went they also spread 1/2 but had a ~$80 tourney where the winner gets a 'free' cruise to play in a final tourney for I think 100K.

One last tip when you play on the pokerpro table - use your seapass id card to show/hide your playing cards - using your hand is usually harder as the touch screns are not amazing.

They had this tourney on ours as well, but it really is a marginal deal. The tourney is limited to 10 participants (they only have one electronic table) with only one prize. I talked with the guy that won it, and he will get a free cruise but it is the cheapest accomodations on a short cruise out of Miami not including tips so the value is a only a couple hundred dollars. He also gets entry into their tourney of winners with a 75K prize pool if he can go on that particular cruise. Otherwise he gets a $500 voucher for some other cruise and loses the value of the free tournament. It's probably ok value if you can make the tournament cruise (Jan 2011) but not a good deal otherwise.

Yes, the "sign and sail" cards are necessary to poke the touch screens effectively.

Yucatan isn't a city. Cozumel is, but then the island it's on is also called Cozumel. If you've only got 8 hrs. there, I'm with Boilermaker - go snorkeling. Best snorkeling I've ever done was in Belize, but Cozumel is decent too, and hey, not much beats splashing around in el Mar Caribe.

So where in Yucatan does the boat dock (or whatever the term is)? I'm assuming either Cancun or Playa del Carmen?

well i have to double check where we are porting, my GF handles all that stuff.

I think i will try out the snorkeling which sounds cool.

As for the hot women thing, that is depressing. Oh well, its not like i'm single anyway. Though eye candy doesn't hurt.
