I guess he´s referring to the recommended BRM. In this case the answer would be the higher variance of tourneys.

depends on the tournament and the structures

HU / 6max DONs sngs should be the same roll as you require for 6max cg

but if you play sngs with more participants the variance increases therefore you need more buyins to cover up a runbad / the swings in generel

Because you experience larger swings in multi-table tournaments.

For example, i'm up over 150k from tournaments lifetime, but i've had two 20k+ downswings with an average buyin of $70 or so.

If I was beating 50nl, or even 100NL at a similar winrate, It would be almost mathematically impossible for me to have a 20k downswing assuming I maintained my expected winrate.

In tournaments, it's easy to have downswings for hundreds of buyins. If you lose a hundred plus buyins playing a given stake of cash games, it's usually not just because you're unlucky.
