Default night of the fisherkings

After several nice sessions at NL 50, I was finally starting to believe I had found an appropriate level of competition. I had done pretty well at NL 25 but was hoping a move up would weed out more of the bad beat fisherkings that lurk NL 25. Well, I was sadly mistaken. This was typical of the play I encountered in this session. ARRRGH!!!!

Hello Seat 6 me:,

Seat 6 me: bets (10) – okay, I figure you don’t call a $5 pre flop bet to play pocket 48 or pocket 4’s…maybe pocket 8’s, but I wouldn’t. Plus he checks to me so, I put the pressure on with a pot bet.
Seat 5: raises (20) to 20 - Is he actually slowplaying pocket 4 or 8? I can’t believe he would make the pre flop call.
Seat 6 me: calls (8.70) – Maybe I should laydown, but I just really don’t think he has either.
Seat 6 me: is all-In.

The dude had nothing on the flop!!! WTF! Hit runner runner to make his flush. Bet into my pre-flop raise and raised my post flop bet with 1 heart on on the board. His only outs runner runner hearts, 7,9 / 9,Q, or 10,10!!!

I don't mean to underestimate the psychological aspect. One might read that his call of my pre-flop was to counter-indicate the strength of his own hand, QQ, KK, or AA or run a bluff. Obviously in retrospect, his call served as the basis for his bluff and his chip advantage over me allowed him to reinforce it.

I know I have had worse beats, but the entire night seemed like it was full of bad beats, and like I said this was typical of them. People matching pot bets on a draw when I had the overpair on the board. That being said, I realize that I am not fully accounting for implied odds.

In anycase, I know in the long run these people lose, but more importantly now realize the fisherking isn’t so rare even at NL 50.
