Default Can anybody explain this to me?

This is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen someone do and I'd really like any explanation from any of you as to his motivations.

Backstory: Two table tournament at PokerStars. We're down to 5 people with relatively equal stacks (I'm short stacked with 4000 with the chip leader at 7000). For no reason at all, my ISP shuts down and wont restart the entire night. I figure I'd blind my way to 5th (One short of the money).

The next morning, I check my email to find that I placed fourth! I figured maybe it was KK vs AA and there was no avoiding it. I decided to check the hand histories to see what happened.

Here are the last three hands in chrono order (flipped from the email) with comments and the names changed (--SUCKER--) is the guy that busted out before me.

The first hand he had QQ which is fine and he doubled up. The very next hand, with me at 110 chips UTG, he sees the flop with A8, and reraises all in on an open ender! There wasn't even a chance that the other guy would fold (he was commited). Why would someone do that when folding would give them at least $18 (4th place) where playing made him lose it all.

Any possible explanations?

The only explaination that I can think of is that he was trying to steal pots when he saw that you would be out on the bubble, and everyone else would probably tighten up alot untill you were gone.

But the person in front of him raised big (with top pair) and was committed to the pot. No one was gonna fold there. If he went all in preflop I would see the reasoning, but not with someone pot commited.

It's funny that even if the straight hit, the guy with top pair would have busted so I was guarenteed 4th place by the turn of that hand!
