Just had to re-open this thread to thank the wonderful posters for the advice. Also, SSH has many many details that are single sentences, perhaps not emphasized, but I re-read chapters and hand quizzes a lot, and it really has helped. Even the book says it'll likely take a couple readings to get everything down.

I don't have everything down now, but I am a much better player.

I'm also reading Phil Gordon's book, and it's a great read. It's very general, not too detail-oriented, but it's a wide overview of general strategies and approaches, and things to look out for, etc.

But back to SSH...I think if one follows the book's own advice (re-read chapters and revisit the hand quizzes) it really is a heck of a book.

But one thing that they don't talk about enough is that even doing everything right, you can still lose for the night, even the week. Then if you play against better players, that could be the month or longer.

Was it Wasika who said that a decade ago there were only a few players who could win tournaments, who played aggressively and dominated? Now everyone plays that way so you need to play ultra-conservative, see flops and take down pots when you are able without big gambles? (or something to that effect)

With everyone studying and living the game of hold 'em you certainly want to be working on your skills in another poker variant. So many competent players means that luck is much more of a factor than ever. As we battle in hold 'em against players with shelves full of poker books, average to good players are winning Omaho tourneys and other games.

Example: My weekly game is a grind and anyone can win on any given night (although they don't and the best seem to always be there at the end), but when side games develop we normally play omaha and 7-card stud. Those of us with even the slightest knowledge of these games clean up. Players that have taken me down in hold 'em are playing the board in omaha, which is a basic violation of the rules, let alone using any strategy in their play. They are good in hold 'em but pure amateurs in anything else. This scenario is ripe for the picking. Granted the money is in hold 'em, but you have to admit that you do get sick of playing it after awhile.

The kids are all hold 'em specialists, so if you can get them in a dealer's choice game then it's on. I get to wondering how much longer hold 'em can remain the king of poker? Forever? All things are cyclical and get stale. Eventually the next thing will come along. Be good at that too.

I hear if you get in a side game with AoE, and its his choice, you best have brought your pokemon cards, cause he will be playing his jigglypuff deck.

I have no idea what that is bit it sounds like you have intimate knowledge on the subject.

I do like to call out dealer's choice games like Minnesota hi/lo with two face kickback and watch the faces of my opponents immediately contort in confusion. My buddy always responds with "he means omaha."

The crazier the game name, the bigger the laugh.

"Hawaiian sugar shack with sweet toothed spades" made one old timer head for the bar until the next hold 'em tourney started. "I got him" I said.
