Default School'd - A useful experience

Hey guys

Through watching all the video's here, getting advise, reading and continuing to play I think my game's improving but this weekend just taught me how VERY far I've got to go.

Mate came over on Saturday, we were going down to Birmingham for the weekend. The guy's been playing online just about forever and, knowing that I've been floundering a little of late, voluteered to watch me play a few MTTs under his eye. (Similar to something Pokerzone and Poker channel do over here with their "Play with a Pro" series)

Played 3 tournies. First few rounds of all 3 were pretty much what I expected (Apart from a freeroll blowing up in spectacular fashion with the K4o shoving into my QQ to bust me) however once we started approaching the point where the blinds become relevant the words "Chump" and "Weak" (With extra eeeeeeeeee) and "Get off that FOLD BUTTON!!" were coming out far too much for my liking, especailly when people were raising my blinds. The truth was that he was just seeing FAR FAR much more than I was in each of the players and taking much more account/advantage of the table image that I/we had set up by playing tightly to begin with allowing me/us to accumulate chips and start going very aggressive when the bubble reared its ugly head (since no-one wants to bust on the bubble).

Finished up cashing 2 of them (came 18th out of 700-odd in one), which was fairly nice, but I'd have done it for free to get that sort of advise even if it did hurt like hell and make me feel like a chump . Just wish I'd done it one the PC rather than the laptop as I'd have Camtasia'd the session. His view on the whole thing was that it's mainly experience combined with a little luck (I did get caught with a dominated Ace at one point but sucked out and won more than a few coin flips). Just hope I can take something more out of it and don't re-lapse to my old ways.

No substitute for experience I guess.

Good post. I used to do exactly the same playing tight in the early rounds and getting bullied out of pots easily later on.

my advice would be to read Dan Harringtons two books on NL Torney poker.

Worth their weight in gold and dollars.......

Thanks Lenny

Managed to pick up both books, this month. (First book I bought were Low Limit books, Sklansky/Jones etc) Just getting through them and finding them very useful. Helps understanding the theory much more.
