The Gaming Industry in WA doesn't give a shit about liberal, conservative, green, independent, libertarian, communist,........ They will simply donate campaign funds to whomever is power. And, probably, to their closest rivals, just in case they get elected. Result? All bases covered. Go ahead and vote in the Reform Party. The gambling lobby will fill their coiffers.
I'm just across the river in OR and have keep a wary eye on the situation.
Democracy in America? Don't make me laugh. Big Business has more influence than voters. Good luck getting this online ban rescinded. With any luck, the court system will overturn this horrible law.

All50 makes some good points. It's not about the politics, it's about the money. However, I would like to point out that Washington is a somewhat-complicated state, politically. There are basically two states in one. Western Washington and Eastern Washington, seperated by the Cascade Mountain Range. Eastern Washington is very rural, very conservative. Western Washington is a combination of incredibly liberal cities (Olympia, Seattle, Bellingham), surrounded by incredibly conservative suburbs and a mix of liberal/conservative rural areas. Geographically, the majority of the state is conservative. However, as population goes, the state leans a bit to the left because of the cities, specifically, Seattle. Personally, I don't ascribe myself to either side, I take my politics from a variety of sources, some conservative, some liberal. But I will say this, the government in Washington isn't liberal, it's ineffective, bureaucratic. Not to defend them, but they didn't try to get rid of the 2nd ammendment, they tried to get rid of semi-automatic weapons (for which, there is no purpose but killing people).

Let's not be all red state/blue state here. Most Democrats are spineless apologists that will say anything to get elected. However, most Republicans are heartless not-apologists (hahaha) that will DO anything to get elected. Let's not make it out like either side is "better" or "right", they're both shit. Democrats, for the most part aren't actually liberal, not by my standards anyways, and Republicans, for the most part, aren't conservative (quite the opposite really).

If you want to know what liberals think, read one of the Socialist papers. If you want to know what conservatives think, read the Standard or something of the like.

As a last thought, let's be honest and acknowledge that if any side has come close to "Orwellian" tactics, it is most assuredly the Republicans (Fox, NSA wiretaps, etc...)

politics is often about money. duh

and to claim the republicans have come closest to orwell's warnings, is clearly absurd

fwiw, i am a big fan of neither party. i am a right moderate who leans to libertarian tendencies, but it is clearly the dems who have done the most to restrict personal freedoms

WA state is a prime example

both parties kinda suck, but i'd way rather have the repub suckiness, than the dem suckiness

orwell, many people don't realize, wrote his works in response to LEFTIST collectivist trends in the world. feel free to research that.

animal farm, specifically, and his works in general were cautionary tales about the totalitarian controls he saw in leftist movements

imo, the dems have clearly done far more to restrict personal liberties than the repubs.

but we can agree to disagree

regardless, it surprises me not at all that a state like WA has restricted online gaming. King County, the liberal county that includes seattle, also passed the critical areas ordinance, that like the SCOTUS kelo decision, takes away private property rights.

I am disgusted that i can no longer play online poker as of june. it is a great source of supplementary income, not to mention entertainment

were probably not going to agree on the relative merits of either party, but suffice it to say i moved from a dem to a republican primarily based on democrats restricting choice, freedoms, and personal liberties - most specifically in regards to school choice, gun rights, and speech rights.

fortunately, WA state has an intitiative process. i feel this is our only recourse in overturning the soon to be online gaming ban in WA state.

according to the most recent article i read on this topic, ALL internet gambling is technically illegal under federal statutes. so, regardless of the state laws, ALL online poker (for money) is theoretically illegal under federal law.

i did a lexis-nexis search and some other searches and according to that, and a few people cited, nobody has ever been prosecuted for gambling online. ever.

according to the WA state gambling commission, the state law was passed to "protect" people from themselves. which is exactly what i predicted would be their excuse. progressives are so predictable. kind of reminds me of the stupid SEC pattern day trader regulations but i digress

the WA state commission claims their goal is not to go after individual gamers, but to go after the companies. which of course they cannot do since these companies are offshore. there other excuse was they passed the law to be "consistent with federal legislation".

one very scary thing is that they could go after any big online tournament winners. some guy in WA state wins 10k or so in an online tournament, technically those $$$ are illegal proceeds under WA law, so that would be an interesting way for WA state to seize the funds. WA state has no income tax, so none of the gambling winnings need be reported to the state, though

of course the fact that the state reaps substantial tax $$$ from casinos has NOTHING to do with their decision either (lol)

You didn't debate, you namecalled. And followed it up with a pointless reply with no facts behind it.

Debating generally means discussion that includes factual evidence, analyzed and countered potentially from either or both sides. Not namecalling and baseless arguments.

You don't like President Bush, that's fine. A lot of others (myself included) don't care for the job he has done overall as the President. But show some resepct for a world leader at least, and disagree with him like an adult might do.
