Default "ich/dich"

Well after 4 years of Spanish in high school, then no foreign language for a full year, i've decided to take introductory german this quarter. (I was going to take Swedish but the 101 course is only offered in Autumn quarter.) I know a little bit of German and figured this would be an easy A as a GPA booster.

I had the impression that "ich" could be pronounced as 'ick' or ' ish' and same for "dich", depending on what part of Germany the speaker came from. The professor only allows the class to say 'ish", and i was just wondering can it be pronounced both ways or is there only one right way? Maybe some of you Germans on here can set me straight. Danke!

No prob. First of all, if you wanna speak good German, or "Hochdeutsch", neither "ick" nor "ish" is correct. People from Berlin say "ick", and "ish" is...well, it's hard to explain, but it has a "vulgar" touch, you can speak like that if you are among friends and don't care much, but it's not good German. Really kinda strange, it's like the difference between "want to" and "wanna", or "gotta" and "got to", it's colloquial language. Obviously everyone understands it, but I guess you would not use language like this when you apply for a job, correct? So, the proper pronounciation is more of a hissing sound, as the "ch" is very often, but not always. You probably best check out http://dict.leo.org, that's a very good dictionary, which also has pronounciation samples of most german words.

Was surprised, when i read the title.

The official german pronounciation is "ish" .

But as in other countrys the germans have different dialects.

So in Berlin the pronounciation is "ick".

On a sidenote, whenever I hear someone say "ish", I immediately think of Moses P. and Sabrina Setlur, and start to grin.
