With play money the players aren't playing for anything - this I think is why it is not the same game. There are no consequences. I agree that a $5 SNG is not the same as the WSOP but in both venues the players (at least most of them) care if they win.

I don't see that the age is an issue though. I'm 33 but I don't think poker is any more legal for me than him.

Phil Gordon's Little Green Book is a great asset and would be a good place to start as it's got solid info that wouldn't be over your head.
I think if I got a few experienced players together who would act as if they were playing for real money, I could benefit from playing with them. I'd just need some generous people to contribute their time to playing with me.

the site reviews on this site say that the play money games at the espn poker club are actually pretty good, because you can't constantly reload your play chips more than once a day.

You'll need to lie about your age there too. I tried signing up at the speed of light to take on MRV, who called me out over there. I don't remember when I said I was born, but apparently it didn't add up to make me over 21. (Hey MRV! Let's go already!)

Not that I'm 21 anyways, but that's beside the point. Ooohhh, Canada... with your age limit of 18...

Anyways, it's against the TOS of this site to talk about and endorse underaged gambling, so I guess we're all in big trouble.

Seriously though, just get a game together with your friends.

So playing against people with a 50% flop seen percentage is poker, but 80% isn't?

It just takes a little bit of adaptation. Sure you'll probably pick up tonnes of bad habits if you take the same strategy to real money games as you did to beating play money games, but if you're reading all the while and playing home games on the side, I doubt there will be any damage.

Regards

Oops... I didn't know about the age rule in the TOS. Underage gambling is bad, kid - don't do it!!! (However, poker is a game of skill not gambling)

Fox, the point I'm making is not that play money isn't poker, just that it is so different from real money poker at any level that it isn't a useful thing to play if your intention is to eventually play real money games well. Perhaps I'm reading too much into his second post, but it sounds like he's not just looking to crush PM games forever.

How about freeroll tournaments? I suppose I could learn a little bit from playing in some of those, especially in the final table (granted I make it there). Where are the best places to play freeroll tourneys?

If you wanna play a lot of freeroll tourneys I would recommend to register at the big poker sites like party poker, pokerstars, Full tilt, Everest and some more. Look for the freerolls and register. So you will have a lot of freeroll tourneys and can get experience.

Registered in the $2,500 PPA Drive Freeroll on Full Tilt. 90 places are paid, & while I am setting my sights to come in 1st, I wouldn't mind placing 2nd-9th. It's still a significant sum of money, esp. coming from nothing. It starts tonight @ 10:40, so any tips/advice/what to watch for/etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I'll let you know how I do, ASAP.

Edit: I missed the tourney by a couple minutes. Just my luck, too.
