Default New Beginner Strategy

Hello all...noob to the forums here

A little background... i've been playing home games for a short time and simply enjoy the game from social aspects to competitive drive to win, I've purchased and read already once WNLLHE, been reading here several great threads from Ishbu(sp?)'s drive to 10K and numerous others. I've gotten myself familiar with the software at PS and Pacific by playing both freerolls and playmoney games (woah what an experience that is ;) )..

My goal is to become a proficient player and of course WIN SOME MONEY!! (this is actually specified but meh..)

Here's the plan:

I've been saving up some of the wekends "entertainment" money to start my bankroll going and will start the actual money games in October with a BR of a couple hundred.

1. Planning on starting at the micro 1-5$ SNG
2. Looking to play 50 in the month

So the question being..

1. Is this a good starting mentality?
2. Should I mix it up a bit from the SNG?

I will most likely be asking questions that I can't find in the search and hope to get some great answers...

Thanks....

....

I think the biggest thing about only playing SNGs is that you will eventually go through a long swing of not cashing at all. It's something that all tournament players have to deal with (and cash too, but I think it's less common in cash to make nothing for a really long time). If you think you can deal with that and stay on top of your game, I think that'll help a lot.

You're starting out with a healthy roll (not sure exactly what "a couple hundred" would be, but it's certainly strong for micro-stakes) so you have plenty of room if you decide SNGs aren't for you and want to switch to cash or mix it up a bit.

Good luck.

You stand a better chance of being satisfied with your progress if you eschew tourneys and play ring games, in my opinion. This is where you learn the fundamentals of poker itself. I suggest you purchase PT/HUD and play NL5 @ Stars where you can buy in for 200bbs and learn deep stack poker.

Good luck!

Thanks for the GL's and welcomes...

Yes, forgot that PT/HUD is on my list of "things to do/get"...

I'm still stumbling through the lingo here and Jimmytrick, you mention "NL5 @ Stars " where i can buy in for 200bbs...assuming (i know terrible) from what I read so far that would be 200 * .05 = $100 for a .25/.50 table?

If that is the case is LH or SH better for the learning curve?

Jokeslayer...a couple hundred would be dollars not thousands !!

The 5NL tables @ Stars have blinds of 1c/2c which means you can buy in for 250BBs. Any higher limits have a max buyin of 100BBs ie 10NL the blinds are 5c/10c. IMHO SH is probably better in terms of learning as you will be playing a lot more hands and as JT said cash games are probably better to learn the fundamentals as SnGs have a lot of push/fold poker and not as much postflop play.

I ran over and played a hand to show you the game I suggest:

PokerStars Game #12284902343: Hold'em No Limit ($0.02/$0.05) - 2007/09/26 - 16:44:58 (ET)
Table 'Menkib IV' 9-max Seat #7 is the button
Seat 1: jtodb222 ($6.52 in chips)
Seat 2: Haijzo ($9.16 in chips)
Seat 3: Minimi2000 ($11.74 in chips)
Seat 4: gozer5 ($10.11 in chips)
Seat 5: bavarianbest ($10.01 in chips)
Seat 6: cheesiedog ($3.29 in chips)
Seat 7: 69LaGo ($4.93 in chips)
Seat 8: MiDra666 ($12.95 in chips)
Seat 9: jimmytrick ($10 in chips)
MiDra666: posts small blind $0.02
jimmytrick: posts big blind $0.05
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to jimmytrick [Kh Kc]
jtodb222: calls $0.05
Haijzo: folds
Minimi2000: calls $0.05
gozer5: calls $0.05
bavarianbest: folds
cheesiedog: folds
69LaGo: folds
MiDra666: calls $0.03
jimmytrick: raises $0.35 to $0.40
jtodb222: folds
Minimi2000: folds
gozer5: folds
Haijzo leaves the table
MiDra666: folds
jimmytrick collected $0.25 from pot
jimmytrick is sitting out

Not only postflop skills but also preflop skills such as when to play speculative hands can be learned. In this hand you see that if any of these players except jtodb had a pocket pair they should have autocalled having great implied odds to hit a set.

I meant, was it more like $200 (which is a solid bankroll for $5SNGs), or more like $500 (which is more than you probably need, although it's probably still best to start small)

Whatever you do you should play on a softer site than Pokerstars.
