Default Party vs Stars

Folks,

I have been playing at stars for a couple of years, mostly low limit STTs ($5 and $10s) and some of the scheduled MTTs. Overall I am down over that time, but in recent history I am a break even/slight loss player. I don't play to pay the bills so poker is just a hobby really.

I 4 tabled some $5 STTs at starts this evening and in those 4 games I caught 5 runner runner bad beats, 4 or which took me out of the game. If you have read my previous posts you should know that I don't follow the 'stars is rigged' philosophy but after a session like that, I decided to have a look at another site. Since I run linux, my choices are limited but I opted to deposit some money at party poker.

Now, my question.... while I am basing this on a completely statistically invalid data set, is party a heck of a lot softer than stars? Must have played about 6 or 7 games at party and I am up about $60 already. Won the first STT I played, 2nd in the next, then 2nd a 20 player game. Got into a raising war with my AA against some other guy and when I eventually pushed all in, he fliped J8.

Since I *am* basing this on a pitiful number of games, I just wondered what the consensus was from you more experienced guys. Is party a push over compared to stars?

Party is a lot softer than Pokerstars, and you have been running hot on Party.

Online poker isn't rigged. Absolute has superusers. That is all.

Uhh, what?

To OP, I'm curious that you say your choices are limited since you run linux. I didnt know stars and party have linux clients... do they or are you running some kind of emulator like WINE (yes I know wine isn't technically an emulator). If so, why can't you use it on other clients? And to answer your question it is a well known fact that Party is very soft and and Stars is one of the toughest sites.

For Pokerstars I use WINE, yes. Pokerstars runs pretty well under WINE. There are a few minor issues but they are more of an annoyance than a real problem. Many other clients are not quite as compatible. Full tilt, for example, will allow me to join tables but the deposit feature doesn't work properly.

For Party I just use their Java applet client which works nicely. Pokerroom has an applet but so far all it seems to do is lock my browser.

I 4 table $10 STTs at Party. They have turbo, speed and regular STT. I play the regular STT in 6 or 10 seated. It's pretty soft. I could probably 6 or 8 table the STTs but I need to upgrade my computer to do so.

As for Stars, it's fun to play there but you're not making the most $$ playing there in cash or STTs.

for myself...and again my data set is also not that large - I have found Party Poker in general to be a much MUCH softer game than most sites out there. If I were to rate it I would put it 2nd to Cake network for ATM-age. Only thing about Party is that they have a casino feature - and due to my history with late night come home slightly (like Pope slightly Catholic) sloshed casino-tilt, I only play sites now that do not have -EV slot style casino games. Worth bearing in mind I guess.

Just make sure you get a party deal or at least a bonus, cause they rake so freakin much, especially at the micros.

Party has weak competition but if you're a low stakes player the $5 tourneys charge a dollar in tournament fees whereas Pokerstars only charge 50c. So there's not a whole lot in it.

If you move to Party

A) Only play the $10 because of the reasons states above.

B) Don't just move there because you're running bad on Pokerstars because you think it's rigged or you're just not lucky enough on that site or something.

My mate moved to UltimateBet from Pokerstars and said "I prefer UB because I get less bad beats at that site and seem to get more hands". As you may have guessed he's a losing player.

Also your sample size is WAY to small to tell you anything at this stage, play about 200 sngs and you'll be closer to the truth.

Party has got a lot harder than a few years ago. I have played on stars and I find its about the same as party. I am looking around for easier competition, I think I might try pacific.

I think there is fair amount of collusion/cheating online, I have even seen players do it in public places. Maybe they are weeded out from time to time but along with higher rake charges, reduced bonuses and generally tougher competition....its quite difficult to win these days.
