Default Fixed Limit vrs. Panhandling

This conversation came up at one of the microstakes tables this morning, and it seemed like an interesting question...

Let's assume you make 2 Big Blinds / Hour playing small stakes fixed limit. How high do you have to play before it would make more sense to play poker than panhandle for change? The joke was that we were going about building a bankroll "all wrong".

We weren't really sure, because we had no idea how much a panhandler can expect to make in an average hour (this is further confused by the fact that you'd probably have more success panhandling in New York City than some small town somewhere). Anyone have any idea?

Note : It also occurs to me that this would potentially be interesting grounds for a fun prop bet.

One pretty obvious flaw in that logic is that playing and beating microstakes while at the same time studying the game will provide you with the skillset to move up beat higher stakes, while panhandling obviously does not. Also, it does not seem like something you'd do for fun, right?

Panhandling is not something you'd do for fun, but neither is minbet, so it's a wash on that point at least.

I'd rather beg for money than play limit hold'em professionally.

This is a good point to keep in mind. There are obviously other considerations than the directly earned money when you're playing microstakes. This applies to a lot of things. Working in a factory, for example, would probably pay more than many internships, but the long-term benefits of the internship would be worth more than the wages of the factory job. Taking college classes costs money, but is worth more than taking a minimum wage job out of high school. We were only looking at the two options in very raw economic terms though. Conversations only go so deep at 3 in the morning. It's also important to note that it was a simple "versus" comparison - obviously there are better things to do than play for dimes or beg for them (or post goofy things on message boards).

I guess you would have to make bankroll building the only consideration you were looking at. You would have to assume that you already had the skills to consistently beat the stakes above micro, and were just looking at the faster way to get some money to play them.

Oh, and... ..."fun"? What on earth is that? I think I abandoned that entire concept after a ~210 BB downswing a few years back.

I get a penny here and there - it's like a flock of doves left and each of them pooped 1c into my account.

What the medications can't do - let Floyd do the rest.

*sigh* Used to be a good site.
