Default New to poker online

Hello everyone,

I'm a new player to Poker and would like to gather some advices on the things to do when starting. I've been playing online with play money but i am going to put some cash into Titan Poker to start playing for real. I usually play Hold'Em No Limits.

I would like to ask you guys how do you do to calculate the pot odds of your hands when you are waiting for the first and second draw.

I would also like to ask if there's any program to track my poker statistics or something.

I'm really starting to play poker online so my questions may sound a bit dumb. Thanks in advance to everyone.

Welcome!

First of all, and please please remember this.

If you were "Crushing/winning huge" at play money, please do not think this this will translate into you doing well for real money.

Even playing at the penny tables, it is a night and day difference. I am not saying you are not going to do well, I am not trying to crush your dreams and ambitions, but I want you to look at it realistically. You just might crush real money too, but don't think the play is going to be teh same is all I am saying.

Read.... alot.... books, forums, suck up any and all information. If you are reading something you don't quite understand, ask a question.

The nice thing about here, is that the signal to noise ratio is really low, so you should get all the answers you need.

Holdem manager and poker tracker 3 are the two most popular, both as far as I know have free trials to check which one you like more.

Make sure you follow proper bankroll management, this should help you from destroying your roll/money in your account, playing above your head.

Follow good bankroll management if you don't want to have to keep depositing. There are plenty threads on it in this forum, so do a search and ask questions if you are unsure.

If you haven't deposited yet. Look up Rakeback and see if any sites will give you rake back.

Good luck and don't do anything stupid!

#1. Net up a neteller account both to quickly deposit and withdraw, hope it is still free for you.

#2. Research rakeback and search for the best rakeback offers and sign up through the best affiliate for that poker room. Don't play at rooms without rakeback at rooms without rakeback make sure they have a good and easy to clear deposit bonus and only play there until your bonus clears. Don't open play money accounts-they cost one rakeback.

#3. Plan your bonus whoring six months in advance and get the tracking software that will work at all the sites you play: Hold'em manager; Poker tracker and Poker office are the big three. If you're just bonus whoring a room without rakeback, look for an affiliate who will give you one of these programs for free if you sign up through them.

#4.Bankroll management is the key to long term winning poker, assuming you're a winning player to start with-so never gamble, just be the "casino" and make variance meaningless. PS don't start to think you're a winning player before you've played 20k hands and don't be sure of it at 50,000-100k hands.

#5 Use your tracking software to find the fish, but play with them and analyze their play to make sure they're fish.Leave tables full of grinders without fish.

#6 The quick for dummies method of calculating hand odds is two times the number of outs per street, then to compare ones hand odds to the pot to determine pot odds.

Thanks for all the great answers! I have the feeling that i just barely scratched the surface of the complexity of poker.
I will get one of those programs to track my stats and i'll start playing at the penny tables.

What books and sites do you recommend me to read that give some decent tips?

By the way, what's rakeback?

I really feel like the smallest fish in the pond... :/

One does not play for free if one is playing real money. Rake is the percentage of every pot claimed by the house about 5% up to $3 or euros. One needs to look at the way rake is collected at every site though, as it is often varied by the number of players in the hand and usually but not always not collected if there's no flop. Rakeback is a deal that one can get where the house pays one back some of the rake they collect, but one can get it only signing up through an affiliate, unless extremely lucky.

No American has played at the American unfriendly rooms for years now and so can't give you any advice; as a general rule pokerrooms linked to online casinos and sportsbetting tend to be filled with fishy gamblers.

Analyzing ones play and others play where big pots were played with a program like poker tracker will teach one more than any book, as will trying to observe betting patterns and putting people on hands. What type of poker you plan on playing is important too. Limit is much more about math than no limit, no limit is about adjusting to other players and throwing off their adjustments to you (aka manipulating them by your table image and changing gears). The more data you have the better in your data basis, so open up tables and just observe them if the poker room's software allows that.

hmmm...why didn't i ever think of that! Thats a good one.

and it seems to make perfect sense...

given that gamblers probably do have issues with consistency

Excellent advice in the thread

Generally speaking listen to people with a lot of reputation points at the forum, most of them are experienced winning players and many even play professionally

If you ever need multi-table tournament strategy advice, you can find me in the MTT Strat forum and i'll answer any question you post
