Default First time playing brick and mortar poker

Ive been playing online poker exclusively for 5 - 6 years and have been playing it as a full time job for about 2 - 3. Simply stating this to demonstrate my level.

Anyway, the closest poker room to me is a hours drive and throughout my brief career I never felt the need to make the drive. One night I was in the area and decided to stop in at the Commerce Casino (Commerce, CA) and give it a shot purely as recreation.

I just assumed that live cash games were harder in casinos so I wasn't expecting to come out a big winner. I entered a 3 - 6 limit no fold'em because it was the first game available and I just have to say this "Holy Shit!"

I could not believe how easy it was. Online, I learned to concentrate and analyze my opponents. My only information on them is the cards they play and how they play them so my concentration level is heightened.

In this game, I could smell the alcohol to my left, drunk and poor judgment, two buddys playing together having fun basically telling each other there hands before the river. Another one cheering when he hit his diamond on the river with the game still in action. Not any of them even glanced at me to pick up a tell. I made out with $94 after 3 hours of play.

Since, I went to San Manuel (san bernadino) and oceans eleven (oceanside) and had very similar results and experiences.

Im experienced to know that I need a larger sample size and at higher levels it will be much different. But my conclusion here is that internet poker players are either superior or that learning online first is the best way to learn before playing live. Its my opinion of coarse but im going to start making that hour drive a little more often!

gave you a new guy rep point!

Off line players tend to be fishy gamblers. It's also incredibly easy to read players off line, as one has more than just their betting patterns to go on. I too have limited off line experience, but that I have persuades me that the common place claim that $100 buy in NL off line is like $10 NL on line are giving the brick and mortar players too much credit.

You said that it is believed that $100NL off line is like $10NL online? Hmm, I have to disagree with the general statement. I entered A $100 - $300 NL live and the quality of players was the same as my limit experience. I guess I got lucky and landed the right table.

Regardless, my confidence in my reads were far higher live than in a common $100 NL online game.

So I completely agree with you, live players are given to much credit

200NL live is 5-10NL online

500NL live is 25-50NL online

2000NL live is 200NL online

$10k live MTT = $200 online MTT

$1k live MTT = $50 online MTT

$200 live MTT = $5 online MTT

Anything lower = $1 rebuy online MTT

In Australia anyway i'd say thats about right anyway. Vegas is slightly tougher but similar. Aruba is softer than Australia. Haven't really played anywhere else.

The problem with live though is a) rake and b) so few hands per hour since you can only play one table and in most non major casinos the dealers suck

Yes, online players are generally superior to live at any stakes though

this reminds me of the inevitable 3monthly thread on every chess site, comparing the site's ratings to fide ratings...

quantitatively, it can't be done.

If anything I'd think vegas and places like AC would be easier at the lower limits rather than harder, compared with your average casino. You have 100x more tourists than you would elsewhere.

You have obviously never played in Australia

Vegas live games are way tougher than fri/sat nights at Crown and any night of the week at Treasury/Jupiters. Haven't played at Star City enough to compare.

Unfortunately though the rake in Australia is so bad that Vegas is probably more profitable anyway if you want to grind live (we pay about 2-3x the rake in aus live that you do in the US depending on casino, although tipping is banned by law in casinos (dont worry staff make like $25/hr here) so it does even out slightly)

Live poker is a goldmine. Unfortunately in my experience it's more life-titling than online...good luck.

It's a goldmine from a winrate perspective (even after rake) but not so much from an hour rate perspective for people who are capable of multi-tabling (at least 6+ tables) online because we're seeing 20 times as many hands, so a 4bb/100 winrate online suddenly equals an 80bb/100 winrate live because we're seeing 20x as many hands.
