Default .999~ = 1, Agree?

Straight copying this from another forum cause I want to see peoples responses.

Quote:

If you vote, explain what you voted and why please.

Several other forums, about 60%+ People think that .999~ infinity is not 1.

Proof 1:
1/3 = .333333...
2/3 = .666666...
1/3 + 2/3 = .999999... = 1.

Proof 2:

x = 0.9999...
10x = 9.9999...
10x - x = 9.9999... - 0.9999...
9x = 9
x = 1.

Yeah, 2 "proofs" (which really aren't formal in the slightest bit) that work for me.

1/9=0.111...
2/9=0.222...
etc
8/9=0.888...
9/9=?

And

What is 1-0.999...

0.000(the 0s go to infinity)00000(still going to infinity)000...
At some point you give up and say you've only written 0s down so the answer is 0. So 1-0.999... = 0 so they're the same thing.

Pretty terrible logic in example #2, fox.

edit: Just got out of the shower (which is where I do all my best thinking) and maybe it's not as bad of logic as I first thought. Since you're subtracting an infinite number of .999... from 1 you'd technically never stop writing a zero after the decimal point. (That's the definition of infinity, right?) So yea... maybe it's not as bad of an example as I thought. Apologies.

I think it is a tiny bit smaller, in the same way that the universe is a pretty big place.

I get a penny here and there - it's like a flock of doves left and each of them pooped 1c into my account.

What the medications can't do - let Floyd do the rest.

*sigh* Used to be a good site.

yeay, we're doing year 9 maths again. *claps paws excitedly*

# 1 is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
# 0.999... can be as bad as 1
# As it's exactly equal to the number 1

infinity is hard to grasp.

Mods can edit without showing revised time? Or do you shower real fast?

I voted no, .9999 to infinity is not . I practical terms they are the same unless on the over side is something horrible; e.g. you have a 1 chance per 1 that your hand will not suffer gangrene vs a .999999 to infinity that it will remain healthy out of 1.

do any of the 0.999... =/= 1 folks have a proof?

the algebraic proof is a sledgehammer of truth imo, you can think yourself into disagreeing with the fractional proof pretty easily, but the algebraic proof is end of thread.

FWIW, I just clicked "Edit" to edit my post. Must be a setting that it won't reflect an edited timestamp if it's a mod who edits their own post. Who knows, VBB is as complicated as infinity sometimes.
