How do you get to this? This is a circular arguement.
You assume that there is no chance of losing (i.e. 0.999999... = 1) to prove that 0.999999... = 1!

If you assume that 0.999999... < 1 then you would lose a non-zero amount of times and thus 'prove' that 0.999999... =/= 1.

How many times would you lose? If you run it an infinite amount of times, you will lose an infinite amount of times. This adds the infinity/infinity = ? question to TWLLM's 1/infinity = 0.

0.999999~=1

Proof:

For two different numbers a,b the following is true: (a+b)/2 is neither a nor b.

If (a+b)/2 is in {a,b}, then a=b.

E.g. 1/2 and 2/4. 1/2+2/4=4/4, divided by 2 is 2/4. So 1/2=2/4.

1+0.9999~=1.9999~

1.9999~ : 2=0.99999~ so 1=0.9999~.

q.e.d.

Does the square root of 1 = 0.99999~ ?

Just asking.

Isn't 0.99999~ squared a teeny bit smaller than 0.99999~ ?

P.S. Fractions pwn decimals.

P.P.S. But if the convention is that 1/3 of 1 = 0.3333~, then 3 times that must = 1.

You can also use math to prove that the universe is non local and nothing actually exists it doesn't mean it's right (disclaimer: my experience in quantum physics is limited to sitting in on one lecture at uni and listening to my physicist friend ramble when drunk)

It doesnt make it true

Would you say .999999999~<1?

Exactly.

It's a non-zero difference.

It's not one damn it your math proves that its effectively one not that it is one.

Also no is winning 6-5, so we're winning the argument obviously.

.33333~x 3 = .9999~ not 1

3 divided by 1 = 1/3, 0.33333~ is just the closest possible estimate

Therefore .99999~ does not equal 1

I disagree with this.
0.33333~ is the best available approximation to 1/3 which cannot be perfectly shown in decimal notation.

you should buy and read david bohm's book Quantum Theory. You will realise how complicated and fucked up this subject is and will probably never voice an opinion on it again

It's a non-zero difference.
Then you should have no difficulty constructing an equation which demonstrates this nonzero difference, or disproving the proofs given in the original post.

1/3 = 0.333...
2/3 = 0.666...
3/3 = 0.999...

so are we saying that 3/3 = <1?
