Default When Poker Goes to Far

This happened in early March but I'm just hearing about some the details now.

http://www.newsdurhamregion.com/article/149798

Danny was a professional live poker player playing 5/6 days a week for the past three years. I played with him a bunch since he was pretty much always there and played in some of his home games (same place where this happened).

This was definitely something to do with gambling debts. It was clearly unplanned and probably at least somewhat self-defense as Danny isnt stupid enough to plan to commit murder in his own basement then run away.

I'm posting this as a warning to be careful in underground games, things like this do happen. And also not to let money run your life and not to let things get this much out of hand. Danny was an otherwise nice guy and he killed someone. Even if he gets off murder charges his life is pretty screwed (~250K for the lawyer) and he is not getting off the weapon charges.

"It's awesome," the detective said of Mr. Nguyen's decision to surrender to police.

I've lived in Houston for four years now and have played in an underground game once for like one hour when my friends drug me there while I was drunk. The reason I never play them is because I just no interest in exposing myself to the unsavory downsides of illegal underground games. It's just not worth it and you're right, poker/money is just not that important ultimately.

Wow shocking someone got shot at a poker game.

In other "shocking" news.....

-an old lady fell and broke her hip.

- a dog got hit by a car.

-car accident on the freeeway.

Actually it is shocking as I played in underground games for more than 5 years and never heard of anyone being shot. Even when people lost life changning sums of money and were in big debt.
Shoting people is bad for buissnes.

in edinburgh, people get shot in the casino.

okay so technically he was shot as he was leaving the casino, but i'm pretty sure he was still on their property when it happened.

he was in the tournament the next night too.

moral: hire professional hitmen, not neds.

I'm surprized to hear the Scottish have discovered gunpowder weapons. I thought the standard method of assassination was still drive-by glassing.

I have heard cases of people getting robbed both in the parking lot of casinos or outside underground games but I had never heard of someone actually being killed before (not counting all the old school stories).

But yes Mr.Vegas I'm sure its happened many times before.
What made this incident shocking to me is that I know the assailant very well. I think you can see why it may be shocking to find out your friend is in jail facing murder charges.

Either you're implying that he has many unsavoury friends, which is astute of you, or else you're giving him too much credit for being able to empathize.
