there's a game by mark taimanov where he sacs a rook and spends the next 20 minutes gobbling all of his opponents pawns. i can't remember who the opponent was sadly. i'll have a look later and see if i can find it.

favourite game is Rotlewi - Rubinstein 1907:

1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 e6 3. e3 c5 4. c4 Nc6 5. Nc3 Nf6 6. dxc5 Bxc5 7. a3 a6
8. b4 Bd6 9. Bb2 O-O 10. Qd2 Qe7 11. Bd3 dxc4 12. Bxc4 b5 13. Bd3 Rd8
14. Qe2 Bb7 15. O-O Ne5 16. Nxe5 Bxe5 17. f4 Bc7 18. e4 Rac8 19. e5 Bb6+
20. Kh1 Ng4 21. Be4 Qh4 22. g3 Rxc3 23. gxh4 Rd2 24. Qxd2 Bxe4+ 25. Qg2 Rh3 0-1

Nice, Vishy won a nice game today after he got "outprepared" in the first round

Dont understand why he played the Grünfeld in the first round. The chance u run into a minefield ist pretty high when the Opponent has a year time for preparation.

edit: And I lost today with Black ag a 2200, made a pretty dumb blunder short on time ( 5min for 4 moves in a sharp but balanced position; closed sizilian btw ). But Im happy that I have decent chances ag such guys.

At what rating (we'll use chess.com for this since it's what I'd go by) do you think I have developed a solid understanding of the basics?

thats a harder question that it appears...i'm not sure what i would consider the basics to be...or if i've ever got a solid grasp of them.

as long as your game is improving, you don't really need to worry about whether you're technically a novice, or an intermediate, or whatever. none of us are masters, so we all suck.

I'm a fan of this, just because Anand is a lot more classy than Topalov and will not pull any tricks when handing over the WCC to Carlsen. I don't think it's true that Topalov is more creative/ exciting.

Yeah, I think so too. Anand is also much more likeable than Topalov

Man that ref, did you see him? He must have been blind, making terrible calls. For a while it was looking like vishy was going to foul out in the first quarter.

Glockers will finally be showing me how the Dutch is supposed to be played, after all those times I watched Kc bungle it.

just because dutch coaches have been in charge of the Socceroos doesn't mean Aussies play dutch style chess.

is my first two moves a typical dutch?
