20 Lightyears away?

Who cares, I'll be dead by the time they've even sent a probe there to investigate, even then it would take more than 20 yrs to even recieve a signal from it.

If it was telling me I could live forever AND move to 'GJ 581g' when our sun fucks up then I'd say well done, but it's not! I'm not impressed.

i'd say we send some nukes there and make sure this potentially habitable rock is defintively uninhabitable. because if we found it, they can find us just as easily.

We need to get a specimen, develop biological weapons specifically targeting them and release it-no point in wasting nukes that we'll need to save us from a giant asteroid

The planet might be bigger, but as it is tidally locked the actual habital zone on the planet will be a narrow band from pole to pole, so it maybe not be able to support a large population of intelligent beings.

it's only the outside that is locked. i think it's pretty obvious that this planet is hollow and the gliesian reptiloids live underground.

also thank you for cutting and pasting something everyone has already read. incidentally you and your source are in error, it is anticipated that Gliese 581 g is tidally locked, this has not confirmed by observation.

and while we're here, the suggestion that this planet could support native intelligent life is to say the least presumptuous. in this environment, we are talking about microbes. similarly professor vogt's ambiguous claim that this planet definitely supports life (100%! he has almost no doubt about it! which presumably means he doesn't know what 100% means) is horse shit. being in the goldilocks zone does not guarantee life. to give just one example, it is quite possible that this planet is totally inert with its atmosphere completely frozen on the cold side of the planet. there are a myriad phenomena in our own own Solar system for which we lack explanations (Uranus rotates on its side, its magnetic field does not originate from the centre of mass and is off by about 60 degrees from the axis of rotation, for instance), we have absolutely no data on the unique characteristics of a 3-4 Earth mass planet orbiting a 0.3 Solar mass star at a mean distance of 0.15 AU with an orbital period of approximately 37 Earth days. we have no idea what is going on on this planet. we are speculating.

additionally, the claim that having found one exoplanet in the habitable zone means that such planets are likely to be abundant is depressing. this observation is a, one, singular, datum. we may simply have found a freak. no, we anticipate an abundance of goldilocks planets because our model of planetary system formation tells us they should exist. the observational evidence is still extremely thin.
