Try Ryan Fees free online eBook (Google to find it). It's more geared towards advanced, higher-stakes players, but I think you can learn a lot and apply a lot of his concepts towards beating the lower-stakes games. Plus, it's free!

don't like fee's book for a beginner.

there are so many first poker books availible now. i don't know if it really matters which one...

you can still do a lot worse than the theory of poker.

getting started in holdem - Ed Miller

from there on you can go various paths. probably no way around coaching sites if you want to have a chance.
