Default Advice please: Just learning

Hi guys, I just found this site a month ago and have been lurking a lot. I realized this site has lots of good players and good information so I decided to stop lurking and register.

Anyway, I have been learning how to play poker for 3-4 months. During the first 2 months, I didn't know the basics. My friends and I started playing cash game for 1 dollar buy in. Thats where I learned all the basics.

I decided to go to a casino and give it a try. For the first 3 weeks I have gone, I have won $300 first two weeks and lost $170 the third week.

My question is... I do not know why I did so bad on the third week. I did everything pretty much the same as my last 2 weeks but I managed to lose all my chips. The only reasons I could think of as to why I lose are because....

1. When I have a strong hand, I raised preflop, but when flop comes, I hit nothing and decided to bluff and lost my chips slowly...

2. Called preflop raise with low pairs, such as 5's, 3's, 7's etc...

3.Nothing comes up for me after sitting at a table for 5 hours...

4.When I was low on chips, I decided to go all in with a pair of kings. One guy called and he had 10, jack. Flops came out 7,2,10, turn came out another 10, river queen.

I just got up and left and was pretty down on myself for being so bad. I know to some people, $175 isnt much, but to me it's a lot, because I don't like losing. Even when I lose like $50, I'm still pretty hard on myself. I guess I want to aim high, but aiming high has consquences, such as losing a lot to learn...

Any advice as to how/what I should play or do would be appreciated guys. Nice to meet you all.

It sounds like you're beginning to become acquainted with the variance of poker. You won't win every time. There will be losing days, weeks, and months. Any experienced poker player will be completely unsurprised by a losing session. The objective of the game is to make the best decisions possible and hope that in the long run the wins outweigh the loses.

I'd suggest posting the details of hands that have given you cause to scratch your head. You'll find that no one really cares about poker hand stories like the one you detailed in #4. That's just because there's nothing interesting to discuss about it. You got it in good and your opponent sucked out. "That's poker". Try to ignore the results after the money goes in and focus instead on how you're managing the things within your control.

Welcome to PokerTips.
