sweet, the olympics are over. now I don't have to watch curling all day long anymore.

some observations regarding the hockey tournament:

- every country seems to have access to at least one really good goaltender

- Jagr and Selanne are amazing

- I like what I saw from Granlund

- hockey sticks are apparently made out of styrofoam

- did I mention Selanne? turns 44 this year, makes the olympian all-star team. what a legend.

something gets up my nose about handing out individual awards for a tournament where guys played an average of five games..bit of a stretch to call lundqvist the best goalie in the competition when price gave up 3 goals in 5 games and shut out both the semi and the final...i won't disagree about sending selanne off with some silverware though. everyone loves selanne.

jagr i have much less respect for, which is a shame. pretty soon we'll be retiring his number, and it would have been nice to be able to enjoy that.

i don't go in for the oh you used to play for us and now you play for them booooo nonsense, even when a rival is involved. it's not that he went to philly, it's how he went there. but our story really begins back in the bleak midwinter of 2000/01.

the short version is, when lemieux came out of retirement, jagr had a tantrum and demanded a trade. we had money troubles and nobody expected lemieux to have more than a couple of years in him, so we had basically one extremely high EV shot at a serious playoff run and then we knew the team was going to have to be gutted. jagr took that shot away from us, and all we got in trade for him was kris beech and two guys whose names i can't remember.

by 2011 we were willing to forgive and forget. jagr was coming back to the nhl, and where would he go except pittsburgh? after all he said he wanted to come back to pittsburgh. he was playing golf with mario. he even said he would play for league minimum salary. "I would play for $350,000 just for [Mario Lemieux] because I owe him my hockey life. I want to pay him back because he has made me what I am".

so that was it. jagr was coming back. he was going to win a cup with us, and retire a penguin...but the flyers offered him $1.3 million more, which is apparently the price of one of the greatest players of all time's integrity, and legacy.

so fuck him. fuck him until wednesday when shero sends new jersey tom kuhnhackl and two guys whose names i can't remember.
