PokerStars Launches VIP Program

, 2006-01-02, by TwoGun

PokerStars used the dawn of the new year as an opportunity to introduce a new player incentive program, the PokerStars VIP Club. The VIP Club is split into four monthly tiers and one yearly tier.

All players begin as BronzeStar members by default. Any player who earns 1,500 VPPs in a month is promoted to SilverStar status. GoldStar status may be earned with 4,000 VPPs in a month. PlatinumStar is reached with 10,000 VPPs in one month. Players earn VIP Player Points (VPPs) by participating in real-money ring games and tournaments.

Beyond the monthly tiers lies the "Supernova VIP" status. To become a Supernova VIP, a player must earn 100,000 VPPs over the course of one calendar year.

PokerStars has several incentives in place to encourage players to reach higher VIP tiers. Electronics such as iPods, LCD Monitors, and Plasma TVs may be purchased using Frequent Player Points (FPPs) for VIP members of certain tiers. FPPs are accumulated at the same rate as VPPs. In other words, if a player earns 4,000 VPPs in one month, they have 4,000 FPPs to spend on merchandise, electronics, or freerolls.

Other prizes available for purchase with FPPs include: a single-table online tournament with you, your friends, and either Joe Hachem, Chris Moneymaker, or Greg Raymer, entries to tournaments ranging from the weekly $215 on PokerStars all the way up to the $10,000 WSOP Main Event, high priced sports cars, PokerStars clothing, and poker books. The more pricey items require an inordinate amount of FPPs.

It is also important to note that before being eligible to purchase any of these items, a player must be a member of the VIP tier required to buy that prize. For example, in order to purchase a 20 inch LCD monitor a player must have 35,000 FPPs and be a GoldStar member or higher. This means, players who have collected FPPs for years leading up to now may have to play a lot of poker to reach the VIP tier required to receive the prize they desire.

PokerStars began issuing VPPs to players on January 1st, 2006.
