Goldstrike World Poker Open $10k NL Hold'em

WPT, 2006-01-24, by TwoGun

Last year's World Poker Open was a bitter one for poker phenomenon Scotty Nguyen. He made the final table of the event but had to settle for a 4th place finish at this WPT event in Tunica, Mississippi. This year, the 1998 World Champion Nguyen let nothing stop him from winning the tournament. After battling through a tough 327 player field, 'the Prince' took down the $970,000 first place payday.

Winning the tournament required mastering a tough final table which featured former WPT champions Michael 'the Grinder' Mizrachi, and Gavin Smith. Mizrachi finished 2nd to Nguyen and won $566,000. Gavin Smith took home $173,000 for 4th place. Spaniard Raul Paez finished 3rd which was good for $298,000. Rounding out the televised final table of 6 was An Tran and Bau Le who finished 5th and 6th, respectively.

The next WPT event is the Borgata Winter Poker Open in Atlantic City. 2006 will mark the inaugural year for this event.
