2006 World Series of Poker Starts Today
WSOP, 2006-06-27, by TwoGun
The third annual WSOP Tournament of Champions (TOC) concluded yesterday at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Poker commentator Mike Sexton won the million dollar first place prize after beating out 26 other participants. Daniel Negreanu finished second to win $325,000. Last year's winner Mike Matusow had another strong finish; 3rd place good for $250,000.
The TOC marked the start of the 2006 World Series of Poker. Today the first public event began at the Rio, a $1,500 no-limit hold'em event. This tournament is expected to draw far more than 2,000 entrants. This event is expected to take three days to complete. The first of forty-five events at this year's series, a $500 casino-employees-only event, began yesterday and is down to 18 players.
New to this year's WSOP schedule is the highly anticipated $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. tournament, which begins on July 12th. The $10,000 Championship Event begins July 28th and is expected to draw more than 7,000 entrants.
