2006 WSOP Event #34: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em with Rebuys

WSOP, 2006-07-26, by Ozone

Already with a 6th place and 2nd place finish at this year's WSOP, Phil Hellmuth has been on an intense quest to win his 10th bracelet. Playing at his third final table of the tournament, Hellmuth entered as the chipleader in the $1,000 no-limit hold'em rebuy event. To Hellmuth's delight, the third time was a charm. He captured his 10th career WSOP bracelet to once again tie Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan for the most career bracelets.

Hellmuth was outchipped 3:1 heads-up against strong European player Juha Helppi. At one point he needed the board to pair on the river in order to survive an all-in against Helppi. The board paired which sent Hellmuth off the stage fists in the air. An hour later, Hellmuth finished off Helppi to capture the elusive tenth bracelet.

Along with his record-equaliting tenth bracelet, Hellmuth won $631,000. Helppi earned $331,000. One of the big stories of the tournament was Daniel Negreanu's rebuy frenzy that ended with a $48,000 investment. That feat is believed to be the most rebuys ever made in a major poker tournament. Negreanu failed to finish in the money.
