Dicks Returns Home

Law, 2006-09-29, by TwoGun

Headlines were made several weeks ago when the chairman of Sportingbet PLC, a large publicly traded online gambling company, was detained in New York on Louisiana-based charges. Louisiana had a warrant for the chairman, Peter Dicks, for crimes related to "gambling by computer."

Based on statements by Louisiana state police and the Louisiana governor, it seems the state is attempting to send Dicks to prison since his company accepts bets from Louisiana residents.

Due to his detainment in New York, Dicks has since resigned from his post of chairman at Sportingbet. At a hearing today, a New York judge cleared Dicks to return back to the United Kingdom. The governor of New York declined to sign the warrant to extradite Dicks to Louisiana. A spokeswoman for the governor said that "The governor does support the effort to restrict illegal offshore gaming but he does not have the legal authority to extradite Mr. Dicks."

Unless Dicks travels to Louisiana, this is most likely the last we'll hear about this case.
