WPT Season #5: North American Poker Championships $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em

WPT, 2006-10-30, by Ozone

In an effort to expand their international market, the World Poker Tour moved the North American Poker Championships to the Niagara FallsView Casino in Canada. The $10,000 buy-in did not stop 497 players from shooting to become the first WPT champ crowned in Canada.

Representing their home turf in dominant fashion, five Canadian poker players rose to the occasion and made it to the televised final table of six players. A previously unknown player named Soren Turkewitsch won the tournament over fellow Canadian Jason Segal. The two won $1.3M and $675k, respectively.

The only outsider at the final table was none other than John Juanda, a poker superstar who is no stranger to the WPT spotlight. Juanda won $217,000 for 5th place. Popular Canadian poker player James "KrazyKanuck" Worth proudly finished 4th for $289,000. John Lam and Marc Karam rounded out the remaining Canadian players behind the camera.

The World Poker Tour will remain in a rather cold climate for its next event. The World Poker Finals take place at the world's largest poker room in Foxwoods, Connecticut in mid-November.
