WPT Season #5: Five Diamond World Poker Classic $15,000 No-Limit Hold'em

WPT, 2006-12-20, by Ozone

A $15,000 buy-in could not stop 583 of poker's best players from participating in this year's Five Diamond World Poker Classic at Bellagio in Las Vegas. With a prize pool exceeding $8,000,000, two of poker's most recognizable faces rose to the top of the field. While the cameras were rolling, Daniel Negreanu reclaimed his spot atop the all-time WPT money list. Negreanu surpassed Tuan Le following his 3rd place finish which paid $592,000.

Anyone who previously regarded 2005 WSOP Champion Joe Hachem as a one tournament wonder were silenced this week. The Aussie poker pro defeated an unknown Jimmy Hanna to win the $2.1 million first place prize. Hanna, a Floridian, won $1.1 million in the first significant money finish of his poker career.

"Zee" Justin Bonomo, of online poker fame, made a strong showing in his first WPT held on American soil. After finishing at the final table in three different preliminary events, the newly minted 21 year old just missed a spot on the WPT stage with a 7th place finish that paid $152,000.

The Atlantis Hotel and Casino in the Bahamas will host the next WPT event in early January.
