WPT Season #5: L.A. Poker Classic $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em

WPT, 2007-03-02, by Ozone

A Los Angeles based lawyer pulled off an amazing feat this week at his nearby poker room. Facing a field of 791 of the world's best poker players, Eric Hershler, claiming to have never played a poker tournament before in his life, won the L.A. Poker Classic and $2.4 million along with it. A South African native, Hershler plowed through a final table full of well seasoned professionals.

Finishing second after a heads-up match that lasted just one hand, J.C. Tran built his career winnings to over four million with a $1,177,000 payday. Fifth place and $455,000 went to Paul Wasicka, the last man who stood in the way of Jamie Gold's Main Event victory last summer. Vegas gambling figure Chau Giang notched $341,000 after exiting in 6th place.

This was the largest field in the history of the L.A. Poker Classic. For now, Hershler is an anomaly among past winners from this event, a list that includes Antonio Esfandiari, Alan Goehring, Gus Hansen, and Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi.

We might not have to wait long to see if Hershler can go two-for-two in lifetime WPT events. The WPT heads north to San Jose, CA for the Bay 101 Shooting Stars in ten days.
