WSOP Doubles Starting Chip Stacks

WSOP, 2007-03-23, by Ozone

Harrah's Entertainment, owners of the World Series of Poker, announced recently that the starting chip stacks for all bracelet events at this year's WSOP will be doubled. Historically, the starting stack size for WSOP events was equal to the price of the tournament buy-in. For example, the $10,000 no-limit hold'em championship gave players 10,000 in tournament starting chips. This year's Main Event will launch with starting stacks of 20,000 chips.

In the case of the Main Event, the tournament structure has been modified to neutralize the benefit of a larger chip stack. Some tournaments, such as the $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. event, may have actually been affected negatively by these changes. To be specific, last year's event started with 50,000 chips and 200-400 stakes. This year's event will start with 100,000 chips and 600-1,200 stakes.

At a glance, the improvements to the WSOP structure as a result of these changes seem to be marginal at best. It appears the largest benefit of the doubled starting stacks might simply be giving players a peace of mind based on the illusion of better tournament structure.
