EU Warns Germany Over Proposed Betting Ban
Legislation, 2007-03-23, by TwoGun
Many European countries are hostile to online gambling since they wish to protect their state-run gambling monopolies. Germany falls into this category and has been seeking to prohibit foreign companies from taking bets from German residents.
The EU recently sent a letter to the German states warning them that proposed legislation to ban foreign companies from taking German bets would violate EU law. As recently reinforced by the Placinaca ruling, the EU has taken the view that a country cannot restrict foreign operators from taking bets if the country allows domestic operators to do so.
