2007 WSOP Event #1: $5,000 Mixed Hold'em

WSOP, 2007-06-04, by Ozone

In 2004, Gavin Griffin set the record for youngest WSOP bracelet winner. That record was beaten in 2005 by Eric Froehlich. Last year, Jeff Madsen beat Froehlich's record and later won a second bracelet for good measure. In the first event of the 2007 WSOP, Madsen's record has already been broken. Steve Billirakis, at the age of 21 years and 10 days, won the inaugural $5,000 Mixed Hold'em World Championship. Billirakis, better known as online phenom "MrSmokey1", won $536,000 for first place.

Finishing second in the 451 player field was another well-known online player, Greg "FBT" Mueller, whose placement earned him $328,000. Steve Paul-Ambrose, a winner on season #4 of the WPT, finished 4th for $146,000.

Having turned 21 just ten days ago, it's likely that Billirakis' new record might be around for more than just a year. The second mixed hold'em event on the WSOP schedule will run on June 24th with a $1,500 buy-in.
