2007 WSOP Event #55: $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em World Championship

WSOP, 2007-07-13, by Ozone

In just a few short days, the 2007 WSOP Main Event has gone from 6,358 starting participants down to 337 remaining players who, today, are set to grind the field away even further on day four. Young Italian player Dario Minieri leads the field with 2.4 million chips. At a not-too-distant 10th in chips is well-known Danish pro Gus Hansen, who has a little over one million chips.

There are five former winners of this event still in the hunt for a second Main Event victory: Berry Johnston (1986), Huck Seed (1996), Scotty Nguyen (1998), Carlos Mortensen (2001), and Robert Varkonyi (2002). Last year's champion, Jamie Gold, made a quick exit on day one.

Three celebrities are still in contention for an improbable victory: Sully Erna (lead singer of the band Godsmack), Sam Simon (co-creator of "The Simpsons"), and none other than Tobey Maguire, an actor best known for his role as "Spiderman" in the recent trilogy of films.

Darrel "Gigabet" Dicken represents the most recognizable online player still alive. Other familiar names yet to be eliminated include Humberto Brenes, Julian Gardner, Chad Brown, Lee Watkinson, and Mimi Tran.

Perhaps the most interesting player still remaining in the tournament is Hal Lubarsky, a blind man who uses an assistant to whisper his hole cards into his ear. Hal is sitting on an average stack of 410,000.

All of these players and more are among the names left to chase the title of 2007 World Champion, and, of course, $8,250,000.
