Harrah's Releases 2008 WSOP Schedule

WSOP, 2007-12-12, by Ozone

The official schedule for the 39th annual World Series of Poker was released today by Harrah's Entertainment. Like last year, the series will feature 55 bracelet events. For the fourth year in a row, the action will take place at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Activity in the Amazon Room will start on May 28th, two days before the first scheduled event. During these two days, players can participate in cash games, satellites, and also register for WSOP events.

The first event is a $10,000 buy-in pot-limit hold'em tournament that begins on May 30th. New to this year's schedule are many $10,000 buy-in events. One of them, a mixed game event, will rotate between eight different poker variants. All eight of the $10,000 buy-in events have been dubbed "world championship" events. There will be a total of 11 such events, the other three of which are the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. tournament, a $5,000 7-card stud hi-lo tournament, and the traditional $1,000 seniors-only event.

The number of $1,500 buy-in events has been increased for this year's schedule. The first of these, beginning on May 31st, has been allotted two starting days due to anticipations for a huge field.

Four starting days have been scheduled for the Main Event. The first of these will be held on July 3rd. The Main Event will take a day off after the four starting days, return for two separate days of "day two" action, and continue for the following five days before taking a day off prior to the final table. From start to finish, the Main Event will take two weeks to complete. Harrah's is prepared for up to 10,000 entries in the Main Event, but it is unlikely they will see that many participants.

A complete analysis of the 2008 WSOP schedule will be the subject of an upcoming Weekly Shuffle article.
