WPT Season #6: WPT Championship $25,000 No-Limit Hold'em

WPT, 2008-04-27, by Ozone

Season six of the World Poker Tour concluded last week with the $25,000 buy-in World Poker Tour Championship. Many of the world's best players were among the 545 competing for a first place prize of $3,389,000. When the field was reduced to a final table of six, WPT legend Gus Hansen had a modest chip lead. By the conclusion of the 22nd hand at the final table, Hansen had 85% of the chips in play.

In one of the most spectacular displays of dominance at a WPT final table, Hansen eliminated four players in a mere eleven hands. Happy to let Hansen do the dirty work, David Chiu quickly found himself as a huge underdog in a heads-up battle. Hansen's last opponent proved to be formidable. After more than 50 hands of heads-up play, Chiu completed an astounding comeback to win the title. A stunned Hansen received $1,714,000 for second.

The four victims during Hansen's elimination spree were John Roveto (3rd - $923,000), Cory Carroll (4th - $593,000), Tommy Le (5th - $395,000), and Jeff King (6th - $263,000).

Season seven of the WPT starts right where season six ended: in Vegas's Bellagio. The Bellagio Cup IV starts in the middle of the WSOP Main Event.
