2008 WSOP Update

WSOP, 2008-06-25, by Ozone

In what is quickly becoming known as the "year of the pro", John Phan has won his second bracelet in just a week at the World Series of Poker. His first bracelet came on June 17th in event #29, a $3,000 no-limit hold'em tournament that drew a field of 716. Exactly a week later, Phan was clasping another bracelet on his wrist for winning the $2,500 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw event. That tournament had a field of 238.

Surprisingly, Phan is just 3rd in the 2008 WSOP Player of the Year standings. Jacobo Fernandez has a slim lead over David Benyamine for recording 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishes in large-field events thus far.

These standings are likely to be altered soon; most of the world's best players will be participating in the $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. championship which begins today. Several top players such as Barry Greenstein, Erick Lindgren, Daniel Negreanu, Chris Ferguson, and Mike Matusow are ranked in the top ten for WSOP Player of the Year honors.

In last year's $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event, Freddy Deeb triumphed over a tough field of 148. One interesting player to monitor is David Singer. In each of the last two years, Singer has finished 6th in this event. Thanks to a bracelet win earlier in the series, Singer sits 9th in the POY standings and could be poised to overtake the lead with another strong performance.
