John Phan Wins Player of the Year

Tournaments, 2008-12-18, by Ozone

It was good to be John Phan in 2008. With the elimination of a few remaining contenders in the Doyle Brunson Classic Championship this week, John Phan sealed the deal on winning Card Player POY honors. Phan was virtually nowhere to be seen in the POY race until halfway through the WSOP when he won two events in 7 days.

In August, he won a WPT event for $1.1M which put him in front for the year. This is the first time Phan has won the award. In 2005, he finished 2nd to Men Nguyen.

Although standings are not yet final, it appears David Pham will finish a close second one year after winning the award. Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier won a WPT event and an EPT event to fuel a third place finish. Ivan Demidov's 2nd place finish in the WSOP Main Event and 3rd place finish in WSOP Europe was enough to land him a spot in 4th place.

For the year, Phan logged 14 cashes in major tournaments for winnings of just over $2 million.
