EPT Season #5: German Open €5,000 No-Limit Hold'em

EPT, 2009-03-16, by Ozone

Sandra Naujoks has only been playing live poker tournaments for a year and has already notched two wins on her record. Last October, she won a €4,000 buy-in tournament in Austria out of a field of 164 players. Her second win was a little more substantial.

The EPT continued it's trend of popularity in Germany; 667 players came together for the €5,000 buy-in main event. Last year's event was won by then-18 year old Canadian Mike McDonald. Improbably, McDonald nearly defended his title this year before being eliminated in 5th place for €197,000.

Naujoks' victory earned her €917,000 and a place in poker history. The only other woman to win an EPT event was Victoria Coren in season three at EPT London. Like Coren, Naujoks win was even more special since it took place on her home turf.

German newcomer Holger Kanisch finished 2nd in the event for €533,000. Mark Gork helped make it a clean sweep for Germans in the top three, he won €307,000 for third.

Swedish pro Johan Storakers took 4th for €237,000. Italian fan-favorite Luca Pagano appeared at the second EPT final table of his career by finishing 6th.

The next European Poker Tour event and the last before the Grand Final in Monte Carlo is the will be held in San Remo, Italy from April 18th to the 23rd.
