EPT Season #5: San Remo €5,000 No-Limit Hold'em

EPT, 2009-04-24, by Ozone

You wouldn't know that San Remo, Italy isn't exactly on the beaten path when seeing how much participation their recent European Poker Tour event drew. In just its second year on the EPT schedule, the San Remo event drew the second-largest field size of the season with 1,178 players. At €5,000 a head, these players were gunning for a massive €1.5 million first place prize.

Seven different countries were represented among the eight final table participants. Most of these players were little-known prior to this final table, including Constant Rijkenberg, the eventual champion. Hailing from the Netherlands, Rijkenberg continued a trend of youth excellence in the poker world by capturing this event at the age of just 20.

Finnish player Kalle Niemi was not too subtle in recording his first live tournament cash; he finished second for €862,000. In third was Swede Gustav Sundell. The home country didn't have representation at the final table for long; Danilo D'Ettoris was ousted in 8th for €114,000.

This was the final EPT event of season five before the Grand Final, which starts April 28th in Monte Carlo. It will be interesting to see if the economic slowdown prevents this €10,000 buy-in event from exceeding last year's field size of 842. Chances are, this won't be a problem. The motto of the EPT all season long has apparently been "what recession?"
