40th World Series of Poker Starts Today

WSOP, 2009-05-27, by Ozone

The first event of the 40th annual World Series of Poker is underway at Rio in Las Vegas. Making a return to the start of the schedule, the $500 buy-in 'Casino Employees Only' event is taking place today. This event has traditionally commenced WSOP festivities but spent the past few years relegated elsewhere on the schedule.

Tomorrow, a $40,000 buy-in no-limit hold'em event will mark the start of the "real" action. It will be interesting to see how many players participate in this ultra high buy-in event amidst economic troubles. Many people are estimating about 200 participants in the event.

Participation in the WSOP will skyrocket this weekend with the $1,000 buy-in 'Stimulus Special'. Organizers are prepared for more than 5,000 players in this special event.

Fifty-seven bracelet events will be held this summer culminating in the $10,000 buy-in World Championship which starts on July 3rd.
