2011 WSOP Event #16: $10,000 2-7 Draw Lowball Championship

WSOP, 2011-06-12, by Ozone

All of the pieces seemed to be falling into place for Phil Hellmuth to win his 12th WSOP bracelet in Event #16, the $10,000 2-7 draw lowball championship. He arrived heads-up with a 3:1 chip lead versus John Juanda and a great chance to win his first-ever non-hold'em bracelet. But Juanda, who has placed 4th in this event each of the last two years, would not go quietly. The two battled heads up for a few hours before Juanda finally put the nail in Hellmuth's coffin.

The win gives Juanda his 5th career WSOP bracelet. Said Mike Matusow on Twitter during the heads-up match, "Poor phil this is a pure poker lesson and I feel bad watching it maybe he will get lucky."

Juanda pocketed $367,000 for the win. Hellmuth had to settle for $226,000 and the pain of knowing how close he was to a record 12th bracelet.

Defending champion David "Bakes" Baker made an impressive run before his luck ran out in 6th place ($51,000).
