Poker Legend Amarillo Slim Passes Away

Poker and gambling world legend "Amarillo Slim" Preston lost his battle to colon cancer yesterday at the age of 83, his family says. Preston won the 3rd World Series of Poker in 1972. Proof of his tenure in the gambling world was the field size of seven players in that tournament.

The famed Texas road gambler's personality appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson eleven times. Slim was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 1992. In 2003, his autobiography Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat People was released. The book contains numerous colorful tales of his adventures as a professional gambler.

He won a total of four WSOP bracelets in his time in the poker world. In recent years, he was something of an elusive figure only rarely making public appearances. He cashed in the 2007 WSOP Senior's Event finishing 96th. It would be the final time he finished in the money in poker's prestigious tournament series.
