2005 WSOP Event #10: $2,000 Limit Holdem

Reza Payvar missed the entire 2004 WSOP to spend time with his father who was dying of cancer. After his father passed away, Reza created a special charity called "Put A Bad Beat On Cancer" to help find a cure for the disease.

After Event #10, this cancer charity should have a nice donation coming its way. Appearing at his first WSOP final table, the Iranian born Payvar controlled his opponents and took down the $303,610 first place prize at the limit holdem event. After the win, Payvar reflected on the special moment by saying, "Last year I found out my father had cancer. I missed the entire 2004 World Series because I went to be with him. I want to dedicate what I did tonight to him."

Former bracelet winner Toto Leonidas lost to Payvar heads up and came up just short on winning his 2nd WSOP bracelet. The $160,185 2nd place prize should be sufficient in helping him deal with the loss. The most well known name at the final table was 3-time bracelet winner, "Miami" John Cernuto, who finished 4th in the field of 569 to take home $73,285.

Last years WSOP points champion, Daniel Negreanu, finished 36th in this event. It was the first event of the year in which the defending points champ made the money. Reza Payvar said the poker boom is slowly spreading to Iran, and that most of his friends and family watch poker on satellite TV.
