, 2005-07-05, by Mercy
Submitted by: Ozone
Gabe Kaplan is better known by some as "Mr. Kotter", which was the role he played in the popular 1970s TV sitcom, "Welcome Back Kotter". In Event #28, Kaplan came up just short of playing an altogether different role, a WSOP poker champion.
Losing to Dan Schmiech heads up, Kaplan won $222,515 after finishing 2nd in the event. The champion Dan Schmiech navigated through a tough field of 269 entrants to win his first career bracelet and a cool $404,585.
Although a famous actor, Gabe Kaplan is no newcomer to the poker world. He has participated in the WSOP for 25 years, and finished as high as 7th in the Main Event of 1980 (the year that Stu Ungar won his first bracelet).
Female superstar Annie Duke finished in 4th place to add $88,500 to her career totals. Several other well known pros who cashed in this event include: Amir Vahedi, Joe Cassidy, Men "the Master" Nguyen, Phil Laak, Chau Giang, and David Chiu.
