Ater taking a long hiatus in lieu of the World Series of Poker, the World Poker Tour got back in action this week at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles. The Legends of Poker Tournament is often a very popular stop on the WPT. With only a $5,000 buy in for the Main Event, the tournament tends to attract many entrants.

The popularity of poker continues to show its face at the Legends of Poker. In 2003 only 309 players entered this event. That number rose to 667 in 2004. This year, a record 839 players coughed up the $5,000 entry fee for the chance to become the newest WPT champion.

Alex Kahaner, of Van Nuys, California, was fortunate enough to defeat a tough final table and win the $1,125,000 first place prize. Coming in second was well-known player Kenna James, who earned $588,210 for his effort. Jake Minter finished 3rd to win $333,600. Tim Phan, movie director Todd Phillips, and Kevin O'Donnell will round out the 6-handed final table action which will air on the Travel Channel early next year.

Well-known pro Paul Phillips, who finished in the Top 10 of this tournament the past two years, nearly accomplished that feat again, but fell just short in 24th. Actor Gabe Kaplan, author Jim McManus, and poker-pro Jennifer Harmon-Traniello also finished in the money.
